Have you ever had a teacher who explained a difficult topic perfectly, but also wondered what to do when the problem had nothing to do with a textbook?
School is not just about marks, assignments and examinations. It is also about figuring out who we are, discovering what we enjoy and learning how to deal with the ups and downs that come with being a student. And while teachers play a huge role in this journey, sometimes what we really need, is a mentor.
A teacher helps us understand a difficult chapter. A mentor helps us understand a difficult situation.
As students, we deal with a lot more than academics. There are competitions we are nervous about, decisions we are unsure of, friendships that can get complicated and expectations that sometimes feel overwhelming. During such moments, having someone we trust can make a huge difference.
A mentor does not necessarily give us all the answers. Instead, they listen. They ask the right questions. They help us recognise our strengths and encourage us to find solutions ourselves. Sometimes, we may not even realise what we are capable of until someone else points it out.
And honestly, encouragement can go a long way. A teacher or mentor saying, “I know you can do this,” before a competition or reminding us that one failure does not define us, can stay in our minds for much longer than we expect.
Mentorship is also about seeing the person behind the student. We are not just grades on a report card or names on an attendance sheet. We have different interests, personalities, talents and dreams. A mentor takes the time to recognise that individuality.
Of course, this does not make teachers any less important. In fact, the best teachers often become mentors without even realising it. They teach us a subject, but they also teach us how to think, how to persevere and how to believe in ourselves.
At the end of the day, school is not simply about preparing us for the next examination. It is preparing us for everything that comes after it. And having someone to guide us along the way can make that journey a little less confusing and a lot more meaningful.
Because sometimes, we don't need someone to tell us what the answer is. We just need someone to help us find it.
